Child Restraint Tested for Ambulances: Lifesavers Report 2007
Dr. Marilyn Bull showed the new dynamically tested ambulance restraint for children. About 10,000 ambulance crashes per year cause injury, most crashes (79%) are frontal impacts, and most injuries are in the patient compartment. In 2003, NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) began research to address emergency vehicle occupant safety. It identified a crash pulse for a typical ambulance vehicle, information needed to test occupant restraints.
The new SafeGuard Transport is a pediatric transport (ambulance) solution for children 22 to 100 pounds. Developed by SafeGuard in collaboration with Riley Hospital, it has a 5-point, easily replaceable harness, an easily cleaned pad, color-coded straps for quick and easy installation, harness straps that are infinitely adjustable, and it folds for storage.
Extensive crash testing has been done with 12-month and 3-, 6-, and 10-year dummies. It has been tested with 213 and NIOSH crash pulses over 50 times in both elevated and supine positions and on various types of cots, in which it was found to meet all FMVSS 213 injury criteria. The SafeGuard Transport will be available this fall.
